In My Shoes

A Wharton Professor Tested the MODEL T. He Stopped Buying Other Shoes.

IAMBIC MODEL T precision-fit shoe on display among contemporary sneakers

Few people in the world have evaluated more premium consumer products than David Bell. He spent 20 years at the Wharton School studying how consumers actually decide. Inc. Magazine called him "the guru of the direct-to-consumer movement." After testing IAMBIC®'s MODEL T precision-fit shoes, he has bought one other pair of shoes total. For the mind behind the direct-to-consumer wave, that is the strongest possible expert read on whether the MODEL T is worth the price.

What follows is the conversation, in his words.

About David Bell: The mind behind the direct-to-consumer wave

While at Wharton, David created the school's first courses on digital marketing and e-commerce. Several of the defining brands of the modern consumer economy came out of his classroom. Warby Parker. Harry's. Bonobos. Cotopaxi. IAB called him "the man who kick-started the direct brand economy." He speaks globally for Alibaba, Google, Nike, and Ralph Lauren.

He has evaluated products across apparel, wellness, skincare, microbiome, and home categories. His days include international business travel, long walking days across cities, 10,000 steps, and meetings where comfort and polish both matter.

We spoke with David about comfort, substance, and why precision-fit footwear reset his standards.

Executive wearing IAMBIC MODEL T precision-fit black leather shoes in a modern office setting, highlighting the blend of comfort, craftsmanship, and professional design. Are IAMBIC shoes worth the price?

How has the MODEL T changed your shoe-buying behavior?

"Since getting my IAMBICs, I've only bought one other pair of shoes. I'm probably not as profligate in getting more shoes now because I have one that really works. It's definitely made me think a little bit more about the price point that I might pay for a shoe that is not personalized. It makes it a little bit more difficult now if I were to go above that price point in a shoe that's just sort of straight off the rack and not customized."

How do precision-fit shoes change wardrobe planning for executives?

"If I've got a black pair and a white pair of IAMBICs, I can probably cut down a little bit the number of formal shoes that I need to buy, can probably cut down the number of sneakers too. It's going to allow me to shrink the number of shoe pairs that I wear, and it's going to make me really think carefully about the value prop of a shoe that's multiple hundreds of dollars if it's not actually customized."

How does the MODEL T perform on international business travel?

"I had an international trip to do recently. I really only had enough room for one pair of shoes in addition to my running shoes. So I took IAMBIC because I knew I'd be able to wear them to meetings, but at the same time to just walk casually around the city. I don't really have any other pair of shoes in my wardrobe that would actually fulfill that dual function."

For executives weighing the same one-pair-replaces-many math, IAMBIC has covered the case for comfortable professional shoes that work across formal and casual contexts in a separate piece.

The science behind IAMBIC's precision-fit technology

What gives IAMBIC's technology its credibility?

"I was really impressed with Raza and just his credential. You have someone on the team who I think really probably knows more about feet and the mechanics of walking around than probably almost anybody in the country. Not easy to get money out of somebody like NSF and so on if there's not real science to what you're doing. So a lot of my comfort about the technology comes from the credential of the technology team but also the fact that you've obviously got major players in the science community who are backing what you're doing."

Dr. Raza Hassan is IAMBIC's Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer with 15 years of experience across biomechanics, 3D modeling, and AI. The IAMBIC precision-fit system is also developed in collaboration with Dr. Hylton Menz, one of the most cited researchers in podiatric biomechanics, and backed by the Center for Biotechnology at Stony Brook University and the U.S. National Science Foundation. IAMBIC was awarded an NSF grant for AI-tailored footwear research and the MODEL T was named a TIME Best Invention.

How does IAMBIC's smartphone 3D scanning compare to other custom shoe brands?

"I've had one experience prior with a pair of shoes that purported to be customized, but it actually involved me doing the fitting using my iPhone. The technology was clunky. It was kind of hard to do, involved a lot of repetition. What I really liked about the IAMBIC experience is it was really simple, didn't take too long, and I had a feeling that it was actually going to work. The proof's in the pudding. The shoes, I now have them. It has worked."

The IAMBIC scan uses advanced smartphone 3D scanning with NASA-grade computer vision, capturing 20+ biometric variables at millimeter-level precision through 3 smartphone scans in a single one-time process.

Where does IAMBIC fit in the consumer technology landscape?

"Technology is something that's being brought to bear on a lot of different product categories. Even if you think about personal care, sunscreen, hair care, skincare, all of those things, food. There's a lot of categories now where there's some element of technology. Food science, skin science, microbiome. This is just a general wave that's hitting. So obviously in footwear, you're talking about the physics of movement and you're talking about using customization to fit to a really important part of the body. For me as an individual consumer, it's more impactful. I have other products that I use as a consumer that have some element of science or customization behind them, but they're probably not as critical to my daily life as what I'm putting on my feet."

What the MODEL T is like to wear

What does the MODEL T feel like the first time you put it on?

"I remember I was in New York City at the IAMBIC office and slipped my foot into my nice new shoes after getting them out of the box. It just felt really snug. It felt like a nice fitting slipper, but a slipper that was substantial. I could kind of sense the fit over the top of the shoe, as well as my foot, fit right in, in terms of the length and everything. It was just kind of snug, almost like putting on a sock with a little bit more heft. No real walking around stomping like you used to do when you try and choose a shoe at Foot Locker, trying the different half sizes."

Does the MODEL T require a break-in period like dress shoes?

"There wasn't too much of a wear-in period. There was a little bit, but anyone who's gotten new shoes off the block that are not just running shoes that are extremely soft in the heel, the fit was very good. That wasn't the typical, as you might get with a dress shoe, an extended period of maybe getting blisters in the back of your feet and the shoe has to stretch out. I didn't really go through that with the MODEL T, even though it does have in some ways the structure of a dress shoe."

How does the MODEL T perform on long walking days and 10,000 steps?

"I'm a reasonably big guy. A shoe that may feel comfortable for a half hour walk is not a shoe that always feels comfortable for a three and a half hour walk. What I like about IAMBIC is even though the snug fit is there and it feels comfortable, it also feels substantial enough that I can walk a lot without getting any discomfort when I go on something of long duration. I try and get my 10,000 steps in every day. Just having something that facilitates that for me, it's one less thing to think about. I know these shoes are going to fit really well. They're going to actually support me in the way that they should."

For readers comparing how cushioning differs from structural support in professional footwear, IAMBIC has covered the mechanics in detail.

Custom design that doesn't look custom

Does the MODEL T look like a custom shoe?

"I really liked the way that it looks, even if it were not fully customized to me, I can see myself buying a pair anyway. The fact that there's function behind the fashion, that to me is a huge plus. I really like that I don't feel I'm compromising anything on aesthetic. I can sort of go in my own shoes that are an extension of my feet. It's tailored to the idiosyncratic shape and arch of my foot."

What does the Sole Print™ system add to the MODEL T?

"I've got my shoes here with me. I've been wearing them all day. What's great about it is its style and function. I just happen to like that mark on the shoe. It makes it distinct. It's something that catches people's attention. A couple of people who've asked me about the shoe have done that because they've noticed that trim. The fact that that trim also has a function that reinforces the value is also super important."

The Sole Print™ system uses wear bar indicators inspired by tire tread. As the triple-compound rubber sole wears, the indicators reveal a layer of color underneath, capturing each client's actual walking patterns, alignment, balance, and gait. That data informs every subsequent pair, so the fit evolves with the client over time. IAMBIC has covered how the last shapes fit before leather is even cut for readers interested in the construction layer.

How would you describe IAMBIC to someone who has not heard of it?

"I'd say, hey, I got a pair of shoes that are made just for me. It's like your feet are made for you. I don't have a bespoke suit, so I'm starting at the feet and working up. I can sort of go in my own shoes that are an extension of my feet. What I really like is I don't feel I'm compromising anything on aesthetic. In a lot of product categories, when you take the better option for your health, there's always going to be a compromise. I'm eating healthy food, but it tastes terrible. Or now I've got these proper kind of shoes, but they actually just don't look very good. In this case, that's not a tradeoff that I've had to make."

How the MODEL T is built

Every MODEL T precision-fit shoe is built on the same 4-step process David moved through.

1. The fit profile

The client completes a lifestyle and comfort questionnaire that informs how the shoe is engineered for daily use.

2. Advanced smartphone 3D scanning

A one-time process using 3 smartphone scans captures the foot with NASA-grade computer vision, recording 20+ biometric variables at millimeter-level precision. Full process details are in the IAMBIC virtual consultation guide.

3. The IAMBIC Fit Engine

Proprietary algorithms convert the scan data into a one-of-one digital last specific to the client's foot shape, arch, gait, and wear history.

4. Handcrafted in Portugal

The shoe is crafted by master shoemakers in Portugal and delivered in approximately 4 weeks.

Frequently asked questions about the MODEL T

Are IAMBIC shoes worth the price for executives?

For clients like David Bell, the price math runs through how many shoes the MODEL T replaces, not how much it costs in isolation. One pair of precision-fit shoes that covers casual, business, and travel contexts can substitute for several pairs of off-the-rack formal shoes and sneakers in the same or higher price range. David has bought one other pair of shoes since receiving his MODEL T. The MODEL T is also HSA and FSA eligible as a health and wellness investment in personal performance.

Does the MODEL T require a break-in period?

No. David Bell describes the MODEL T as having no real wear-in period, in contrast to the typical dress shoe break-in pattern of blisters and stretching. The MODEL T fits to the client's individual foot from first wear because every pair is built on a one-of-one digital last specific to that client's foot shape, arch, gait, and wear history.

How long does it take to receive a MODEL T?

The full process takes approximately 4 weeks from the smartphone 3D scan to delivery. The scan itself is a one-time process that captures the data IAMBIC uses to build the client's digital last for every subsequent pair.

Is the MODEL T HSA and FSA eligible?

Yes. The MODEL T is HSA and FSA eligible through Gale as a health and wellness investment in personal performance. Full eligibility details are on the IAMBIC HSA/FSA page.

Key takeaways

  • David Bell, the early investor behind Warby Parker, Harry's, and Bonobos, has bought one other pair of shoes since receiving his MODEL T.
  • For a 20-year Wharton professor named the guru of the direct-to-consumer movement by Inc. Magazine, that consolidation is the strongest behavioral evidence IAMBIC has on file.
  • David places IAMBIC inside the same category arc as food science, skincare, and the microbiome, which is the analyst lens consumer technology investors use to evaluate emerging categories.
  • His confidence in the product runs through the credential of IAMBIC's CTO Dr. Raza Hassan and the institutional backing of the U.S. National Science Foundation, not through marketing.
  • David would have bought the MODEL T on design alone, which means the precision fit is the upgrade rather than the entry point.
  • One pair of MODEL T precision-fit shoes replaces multiple formal shoes and sneakers in David's wardrobe, which is the value math that answers the price-point question directly.
